Hatha Yoga

Al and Sarsha discuss Hatha Yoga

  1. Ram Bhakt says:

    Om Shri Gurubhyo Namaha,

I would like to add that within the umbrella of Hatha Yoga, any purification practices such as Meditation/Visualization or Shatkarmas and Kriyas as described in Hatha Yoga Pradipika should also be included. Hatha should include some the purification of the subconsious mind. There is a school of though (Bengali Hatha) which has a slightly different eight limbs than Patanjali and this school is definitely authentic Hatha. The Yoga that is practiced popularly in America is not Patanjali Yoga because Patanjali only speaks of three Asanas (!?!). Patanjali is really a text on Yoga Psychology while the Hatha Yoga Pradipika is more a text for healing the body (ie. with “Ayurvedic Practices”) and building the foundations for meditation. To really balance the active/passive, solar/lunar, left/right brains is the goal of all Yogas but Hatha seeks lessons from purification and strengthening of the body and uses it as a vehicle to realize the divine within.

    Love and Light :-)
